TechCrunch x10 bigger than Mashable?

There’s a handy a trick I’ve known for a while (sorry I can’t remember the source) which allows you to view a FeedBurner subscriber count even if it’s not visible on a site. It doesn’t work in all cases but it’s basically a flaw in Google FeedBurner.

To find our the number of subscribers to a FeedBurner feed all you are required to use is this URL – http://feedproxy.google.com/~fc/ – along with the user’s FeedBurner name. Still with me?

Here’s an example:

My FeedBurner name is prblogger (that what this blog used to be called) so all you are required to do to view my subscriber account is this:

http://feedproxy.google.com/~fc/prblogger

Easy.

You can do it with other blogs too. Surprisingly I compared the two heavyweights of the Social Media blog world and the results are interesting. I’ve always thought Mashable and TechCrunch to be on a par in terms of size and readership. Granted TechCrunch has always had the upper-hand but in my own sphere of friends, colleagues, peers and industries (PR, marketing and media) it’s Mashable that seems to be the de facto social media news source.

However comparing both feeds TechCrunch has almost ten times as many ~~readers~~ subscribers as Mashable.

This is only one measure of course and if we were to take a look at traffic data using Compete.com you’ll see that Mashable has surpassed TechCrunch since May last year. My thoughts are it’s down to Mashable’s link baitable retweetable content.

So, in your opinion, which one counts the most? Traffic or subscribers?

UK tech journos you should be following on Twitter

It’s a good start but this is by no means a comprehensive list. Tech journos are usually the first to embrace new technologies (it’s in the genes you see) and it came as no surprise when I was researching UK journos using Twitter that this particular sector has the highest proportion using it. Plus the fact that ‘tech’ is a broad topic which I guess you could say encapsulates a number of sectors really.

UK journalists on Twitter Update

About a year ago I carried out a piece of research that looked at UK journalists using Twitter which was positively received from both PRs and journos. In fact, I’m going to stick my neck out and say it probably helped a couple of people in our respective industries establish relationships with one another over on Twitter. I know it helped me.

With this in mind, and because everyone likes a list, I’ve created this follow up post almost one year on. By no means is it exhaustive and it’s very likely I have missed some people out (I mean, really, it’d be quite difficult to find every UK journo given Twitter’s so mainstream these days).

Before you start here’s a short Q&A:

Q: How come I’m not included in the list?

A: Sorry, the research was done manually and I am only human. Send me an email, leave a comment or ping me an @reply on Twitter itself and I’ll happily add you.

Q: Why have you included me in the list? I don’t want to be, thank you very much.

A: Sorry, my bad, but all this is publicly available. Send me an email, leave a comment or ping me an @reply on Twitter itself and I’ll happily remove you.

Q: Why am I in the ‘Other’ section?

A: Simply because you are the only person on Twitter that works at your publication (or that I could find).

Q: You idiot, I left Acme News Journal six months ago! Why am I still down as working there?

A: Sorry! I did check, but it was late and I was tired. Let me know and I’ll change it.

Q: Anything changed since the last time?

A: Aside from an increase in numbers which, given Twitter’s growth and exposure this past year is obvious anyway, I suppose the most noticeable thing is the uptake of tabloid journalists using it. Last year there were none.

Q: Woohoo! I’m a PR person and now I can start following all these journos and push out spammy tweets about my clients to them!

A: Er, no you can’t. Read this blog post first to see how some journos feel about being approached on Twitter. If you do you’re an idiot and the other 99.9% of the UK PR industry that practice good Twitter etiquette will laugh at you when you’re outed.

@Journalist Did you get my press release?

The last few weeks I’ve started noticing some PR people I follow on Twitter give a heads up to twittering journalists about a press release they’ve sent them. It usually goes something like “@journalist Just sent you a release. Let me know what you think.”

Now, not going to name names because that’s not the point of this post, and besides no one’s saying this is bad etiquette. However, it does smack a little of old school PR tactics. This is what I tweeted:

From this small sample you can see journalists are relatively for the approach. That said, just like in social media, you’re dealing with different views and preferences and no one-size-fits-all approach will work. This doesn’t mean that all journalists on Twitter want to be @followedupped. You still run a risk of being blocked. Also, as @charlesarthur and @jimboeth say, an @followup should be instead of a follow-up call and not as well as.

The responses from PR people are on the whole against such such tactics. If this is a true representation of PR people on Twitter then it’s certainly a good thing as it shows that we’re being more cautious when networking online. Maybe too cautious judging by the journalist’s responses?

Considerations when @followupping journalists about news releases:

Make sure they’ve clearly stated that they don’t mind @followups
Make the choice: @followup? Or follow-up call? (personally @followups seem better)
Understand that you could be blocked from said journalists and ridiculed online for all to see
PR’s competitive – understand that your competitors can see what you’re up to (if they’re Twitter savvy that is)

60 New York Times profiles on Twitter

Following on from the post I published in November on UK journalists using Twitter, I thought it would be interesting to do something similar for the US media. My instincts told me that if one American media outlet was embracing Twitter more than most it would be the New York Times, and although I have no hard evidence it seems I was right. I found ~~60 Twitter profiles but wouldn’t be surprised if there were more~~. Edit: There are more. In the comments Michael Donohoe points me to another two which I’ve added. Edit 2: David Seguin points me to another profile by the NYT Communications team. Edit 3: Additonal ones added. Now 68 Twitter profiles.
