I don’t know about you but when I speak with non geeks online enthusiasts about the online media I often have a hard time explaining how news can travel over the web. There are simply too many channels of communication that no doubt sound alien and complex to the untrained ear. Every-day words (E.g. RSS, social bookmarking, social networks) to you and me dear PR geek may not sound so familar to others.
With this in mind my client, RealWire (formerly webitpr) has produced a short video animation explaining how a story can spread through the web. Vimeo video below and you can download the video files here too.

Good post Stephen and great work from Realwire. The first challenge for today’s comms professionals is obviously staying on top of the exponentially growing number of new channels for our stories to spread. The second equally challenging task is in getting acceptance and buy-in from clients. 2009 will really see the adoption of social media and web 2.0 tools really take off in the B2B space.

Very nice video – I’ll use it in my PR course at Clemson University to help students understand online media.

That’s the opening of my new Social Media: Theory and Practice module sewn up – excellent piece of work. Thanks!

The video does a great job explaining in basic terms without too much jargon while still introducing key concepts and tools. I have already shown one client. The community aspect of new media could have been better addressed but that really is a different monster. Thanks for posting.

This is exactly what I am always talking about on my blog and this little video sums it up perfectly. I think every person in PR should have to watch this video before starting. Thanks for sharing man gonna re-blog it now
Stephen
Niall, thanks. Saw you on Dragons’ Den. Impressive.

I am a student currently studying Public Relations @ Humber College in Toronto. There has been a particular focus within our program on how rapidly social media is developing, and how it can be used effectively. I think now, particularly grads within my year (2008) will be using our knowledge of social media to our advantage in looking for our first jobs.

The calm voice makes this video even more acceptable saying this is not a big thing and hard to understand
reat work. I’ll definitely use this more than once.
